Max Nagl comes out on top after furious battles with Tixier. Podium for consistent Tom Koch. Thrilled fans in hot summer weather in Austria.
Temperatures above 30 degrees pushed the riders in the ADAC MX Masters to the limit in front of enthusiastic fans in Möggers, Austria. Max Nagl (GER) took two race wins in the ADAC MX Masters, finishing ahead of Tom Koch (GER) and Jordi Tixier (FRA), who won the opening race on Saturday. In doing so, Nagl extended his lead at the top of the championship.
Saturday’s opening ADAC MX Masters race saw Michael Sandner (AUT) of Raths Motorsports take the Red Bull Holeshot ahead of Adam Sterry (GBR) from the KTM Sarholz Racing Team. Meanwhile, the other top riders Max Nagl, Tom Koch and Jordi Tixier found themselves in the midfield, with the third-placed man in the championship Stefan Ekerold (GER) at the back. Koch made the fastest progress through the field on the Kosak Racing Team KTM and was second behind Sandner after just three laps. Koch passed the Austrian to take the lead on lap five. By this point, Nagl and Tixier had also worked their way into the top five. One lap later, Sterry overtook Sandner to take second place. Koch managed to open a small gap over the next few laps. In the second half of the race, the battle between Sterry, Sandner, Nagl and Tixier intensified. The Frenchman briefly hit the deck after a mistake, but got back on his bike quickly. With five laps remaining, Tixier on the Sarholz Racing Team KTM found a way past Nagl and Sterry and set off in pursuit of Koch. One lap later, Nagl passed Sterry to take third place. On the final lap, Tixier managed to snatch the lead from Koch and went on to claim his first race win of the season. Koch, Nagl, Sterry and Sandner completed the top five.
In race two on Sunday, Nagl took the Red Bull Holeshot on his Husqvarna and went on to claim a comfortable lights-to-flag victory. Koch took second place from Sterry on the opening lap. The Brit then lost third place two his KTM Sarholz Racing team-mate Tixier on lap four. Tixier, the reigning ADAC MX Masters champion, proceeded to put Koch under an increasing amount of pressure and ultimately passed the German to take second place on lap six. By this point, Nagl had opened a healthy lead, which he managed through to the finish. Koch, Tixier and Sterry easily held onto their positions in second, third and fourth place. Johannes Klein (AUT) of the Sturm STC Racing Team completed the top five on his KTM, finishing at the front of a large group who were wheel-to-wheel coming over the final jump, including Kevin Brumann (SUI), Boris Maillard (FRA), Lukas Platt (GER), Markus Rammel (AUT) and Tim Koch (GER).
In the third race of the weekend, Sandner was again first to sprint over the Red Bull Holeshot line on the Raths Motorsports KTM. Tixier passed Nagl to take second place on the opening lap. One lap later, Tixier attacked Sandner over a jump. In doing so, he caught the Austrian’s rear wheel upon landing and hit the ground hard, while Sandner held onto the lead. Tixier crossed the finish line in 23rd place, while Nagl, Koch, Sterry and Boris Maillard on the stielergruppe.mx Johannes-Bikes Suzuki, were the beneficiaries of this incident. Nagl took the lead on lap three, before Sandner was passed by Koch and dropped to third place just one lap later. Nagl raced clear of the rest of the field to claim his fifth win from a possible six this season. Koch also rode a lonely race before coming home second to ensure he finished on the podium in every race this weekend. Sandner impressed, but was ultimately missed out on third place when he was passed by Sterry in the final third of the race. Tanel Leok (EST) of the MX-Handel Racing Team passed Maillard to take fifth place in the closing stages, while a visibly battered Tixier managed to fight his way back to eleventh place by the end of the race.
Max Nagl took overall victory in Möggers, ahead of Tom Koch and Jordi Tixier. In doing so, he maintained his lead at the top of the ADAC MX Masters table ahead of the next races in Bielstein on 2nd and 3rd July.
“Although I was still having a few issues with the set-up of the bike on Saturday, it was still a really good weekend for me and the many fans at the track. In the past, I have often been unlucky in Möggers. Today’s overall victory is a nice way of making amends for that. Sunday’s races may have looked easy from the outside, but I had to push pretty hard to come out on top,” said Nagl.
“I am back where I belong, having struggled with an injury at the season-opener in Dreetz. I have even more potential, which I hope to exploit in the coming races,” said a happy Koch after his first podiums of the season.
“I made a silly mistake today and hit the ground hard. After that, my front brake did not work and I was pretty battered. Given all that, third place overall is still pretty decent. However, the goal was to win, and that would have been possible,” said Tixier after race three.
All the races from both days of the event are available free of charge as a repeat of the livestream or as individual races via the ADAC MX Masters Möggers playlist. All the weekend’s results can be found online at adac.de/mx-masters.
