Markus Pommer comes from the LMP2 class in the European Le Mans Series. The 32-year-old was the 2014 champion in the ATS Formula 3 Cup. Pommer: “I want to challenge for podiums and race wins again.”
After two years in the LMP2 class of the European Le Mans Series (ELMS), Markus Pommer’s career path now takes him to the Prototype Cup Germany. “The Prototype Cup Germany is developing very nicely and I know all the circuits. Plus, I want to have more of a media presence in Germany again, which is very difficult in the ELMS, as that series does not attract a lot of interest in Germany.” Pommer drove an LMP2 car for the BHK Motorsport team in the ELMS. However, the team is not continuing its involvement in the series in 2023. “Because LMP2 is extremely cost-intensive, we struggled against the big LMP2 teams like Prema Racing. However, I still enjoyed the time – having ended up in GT3, I never expected to have another chance to race against drivers like Robert Kubica, Nyck de Vries and Juan Pablo Montoya. Although we did not have huge success over the past two seasons, they were good times.”
The 32-year-old increasingly felt the desire to challenge at the front of the field again, and consequently began to take an interest in LMP3. “At the time, I had a few questions about this category, to which I was unable to find any answers on the Internet. I spontaneously decided to phone the Racing Experience team. I know the Hauser family from my time in the ATS Formula 3 Cup and we were often in neighbouring garages in the ELMS. Shortly thereafter, team principal Christian Hauser phoned me and asked whether I would like to do a test in their LMP3 car.” Pommer accepted the invitation and was immediately impressed. “It went extremely well, absolutely everything came together. The Duqueine was superb to drive and I have seen in the ELMS, and before that the Formula 3 Cup, that Racing Experience does a really good job.”
Pommer generally feels right at home in the world of LMP. “It is a mix of Formula racing and GT3. LMP racers require the same kind of driving style as a Formula car, but much of what goes on around the car is like in GT3. For example, there is a driver changeover and the car has a roof.” He particularly views the LMP3 class as an attractive category for youngsters in motorsport. “For the young drivers, it offers very good perspectives, particularly with a view to the many works outfits currently competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans again. As a result, you get a good mix of young and old starting in the Prototype Cup Germany.”
So, what are the goals for the man who won the ATS Formula 3 Cup in 2014 and also showed his talent in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship? “It is a bit hard to say at the moment, as I have only driven the car once and am not yet familiar with all our rivals. However, I do know that the Racing Experience team and my team-mate Gary Hauser are really good. As such, I would like to make it onto the podium regularly, win some races, and end the season in the top five in the overall standings. I definitely am not just there to make up the numbers – together with Gary, I want to make my mark on the Prototype Cup Germany.”
